Friendly Forest Products ROSEWOOD BURL Sold Out! We werevery fortunate to acquire more highly figured Rosewood Burls (dalbergia stevensonii), and some large (60 pounders) highly figured ones. We are trying to replenish this stock.
Price as low as $10 per pound.. The term burl as used in wood terminology describes
the presence of a dormant bud. Supposedly these dormant buds
contain all the genetic information to grow a new tree. No on
really knows why they are created by the tree and remain dormant.
Although according to the US Forest Products Lab burls are formed
due to injury or disease. Burls are tumors that grow on a tree.
Likely you have seen some trees that have large balls on them.
Likely these balls were burls. Sometimes the whole trunk of
a tree can seem bumpy and grotesque with burls. Burls can be
in a tree in the roots, the trunk or branches. These same rosewood
trees could have giant burls on them even equaling the diameter
of the rosewood tree in size. And yet other rosewood trees are
completely covered with miniature baseball sized burls. They
do not kill a tree rather the burl cells reproduce wildly and
multiply out of control. The grain in a burl is not linear as
most wood is. Instead it is a mass of round circles that typically
illustrate the tumor's behavior of rapid, random reproduction.
The result is usually beautiful and unique. Which ever is the cause one thing is certain, the highly figured appearance of the wood after it has been sawn is truly beautiful. For many centuries burl wood has been considered a prized possession. Rosewood burl must indeed be one of the rarest displays of natures wonders. The unique properties of rose wood burl make it suitable for sculpting, wood turning and veneer. Some of the most expensive veneers come from burls. In turn, some of the most expensive furniture and cars are adorned with these exotic burl veneers. The samples below quickly illustrate how different the appearance of burls are from regular growth wood. We did have these sizes in stock ranging from football size (about 10 lbs.) to foot stool size ( about 60 lbs). We hope to able to supply our customers in the near future.
